Mt. Angel Abbey Library image
Alvar Aalto a Finnish architect I first learned about, from wonderful Finns I had the pleasure of getting to know when they were in my hometown as visiting scholars.
I also learned that an area Abby quietly features one of only two examples of his work here in the states. This is a famous interior image of the ceiling windows above the main stacks and checkout desk in the Mt. Angel Abby Library. Its interior lines are sweeping with an open floor plan wrapped by administrative work spaces!
Natural light is an ever present detail throughout Aalto's later works and this entire library! I also learned that his name means "wave," an architectural and visual aesthetic theme very evident in the design of this beautiful building. An international treasure, just up the road from here!
